The Fox & Friends show on Fox News in the US asked in all seriousness whether Frozen was “…empowering girls by turning our men into fools and villains?” on Wednesday morning. Taking away the second half of that statement for the moment, does that sound to anyone else as though presenter Steve Doocey seems to think that there is something wrong with empowering girls?
Doocey went on to state, “it would be nice for Hollywood to have more male figures in those kind of movies”. Yes, what Hollywood needs is more men. White, middle-class ones preferably. They barely get a moment in the limelight.
The host then welcomed the CEO of Concerned Women for America on to the show, which apparently is actually real and not some bizarre Day Today-style spoof. He thanked her kids for allowing her to appear. Once again, not a spoof.
Anyway, as much as I have reservations about Frozen and dislike the way dads are sometimes portrayed in popular culture, I think men might ride this particular storm out and, as for empowering girls…perhaps we should give it some thought.
