No Paternity Leave for Robbie Keane

With parents in the UK now able to take advantage of shared parental leave for a year after the birth of their child and both major Canadian parties promising to extend it to 18 months as part of their pre-election manifestos, it seems that Ireland is lagging behind. Or rather, the Irish national football team is.

LA Galaxy and Republic of Ireland forward Robbie Keane became a dad for the second time on Monday, which delayed his link-up with the national team ahead of their important Euro 2016 qualifier with world champions Germany on Thursday night. When asked about the former Spurs star’s availability for the tie, famously-curmudgeonly assistant boss Roy Keane had this to say:

How Keane expects to lead the line against the mighty Germans is anybody’s guess, I struggled to make a cup of tea four days after Elsa was born.
