April 2016's Dad Gig: Frightened Rabbit

I first saw Frightened Rabbit in a bowling alley in West London. This sounds like, at best, the start of a trashy romantic novel and, at worst, like my testimony in court at a stalking case. However, it’s merely setting the scene for me to tell you about the band most worth dipping into your babysitter fund for this month.

Frightened Rabbit

It was the same venue at which I’d seen Jack Peñate  battle valiantly to drown out the sound of a host of overly-refreshed bowlers who had taken full advantage of a record company’s Christmas party free bar. I’m not sure if people were bowling on the day Frightened Rabbit played, I was too transfixed by how bloody brilliant they were.

I’m still carefully negotiating that romance/stalker narrative tightrope, you’ll notice.

Anyway., the band are from Selkirk in the Scottish Borders and released their first album Sing the Greys in 2006, following that with four more long players, including the brand new Painting of a Panic Attack, which is released on Friday. Their breakthrough record came in 2013, with the excellent Pedestrian Verse and from that, this is The Woodpile to give you a flavour of what to expect:

Good, right? that reminds me that I need to test out Frightened Rabbit on two-year-old Elsa to see whether there’s a song that can be added to the Alternative Toddler Playlist; a selection of tunes on Spotify and Apple Music that kids AND adults can enjoy.

Here are the Frightened Rabbit tour dates:

  • Tues 12th April – Manchester Academy
  • Weds 13th April – Alhambra Theatre, Dunfermline
  • Thurs 14th April – St. John-at-Hackney Church, London

Noting down dates of where someone is going to be and when is not going to help me avoid that restraining order is it?
