February 2015's Dad Gig: Elbow

Elbow are back and they’re on tour. Sort of. Proudly stating on their website that unlike many bands, they still boast the same line-up that they did in 1992, some things have definitely changed for the band.

Once upon a time they would chuck their gear into a rusting Transit and circumnavigate the UK, playing gigs in an endless array of towns and cities for months on end whilst fuelling up on cider and petrol station pasties – those days are certainly at an end. Elbow are now the sort of band that book in a load of dates in two big venues and leave the audience to negotiate the transportation logistics. They no longer tour, their fans do it for them.

As a man now entering my late-30s I can completely understand, of course. There’s a cut-off point you reach sometime in this decade when sleeping on a sofa becomes completely unacceptable, no matter how much you’ve drunk.

The music, of course, is definitely worth the effort – in order to indulge yourself with a hefty dose of melancholic guitar-based loveliness, you’ll have to make your way to either Manchester or London in February, with the band playing four dates in the former and three in the latter.

They’ll also be playing a tiny gig in aid of Warchild at the Roadhouse in Manchester on the 24th, which fans can win tickets to by donating to the charity.

Here are Elbow’s ‘tour’ dates:

  • February 5th – Manchester Apollo
  • February 6th – Manchester Apollo
  • February 7th – Manchester Apollo
  • February 8th – Manchester Apollo
  • February 10th – Hammersmith Apollo
  • February 11th – Hammersmith Apollo
  • February 12th – Hammersmith Apollo
