French Couple Banned From Calling Their Daughter Nutella

A French judge has ruled that a couple cannot call their daughter Nutella, claiming that naming her after the hazelnut spread would be “contrary to the child’s interests”. Reportedly he was concerned that the girl would become the subject of derision.

Although parents have free reign when it comes to naming offspring in France, it is the duty of local officials to report potentially unsuitable names to a family court.

There is a long history of names being banned by authorities with parents in Sweden who wanted to call their child Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 banned from doing so, as were the New Zealand pair who tried to bestow the moniker Yeah Detroit on their pride and joy. Yet Frank Zappa had no problems naming his kids Diva and Moon Unit.
