January 2015's Dad Gig: First Aid Kit

Normally, when politicians wade into the world of music, looking to latch on to some fleeting credibility, it tends to go wrong. Gordon Brown should never have pretended to have had the Arctic Monkeys on his iPod when it was clear to everyone else in the entire world that he was more of a Genesis on his Walkman type of bloke and David Cameron’s constant referencing of the Smiths’ Queen is Dead as his favourite album led to guitarist Johnny Marr banning him from liking the band.

However, both Cameron and First Aid Kit have seemed to scrape through his latest clanging attempt to look cool intact. The Prime Minister claimed in an interview that he had sneaked into one of the Swedish act’s shows incognito, stating that he was a big fan and liked their “countryish” sound. Whatever your politics, it’s difficult to disagree with him on this one.

The Scandinavian sisters are touring the UK this month and, if you can’t get to as many gigs as you’d like due to your parenting responsibilities, then this is one act you should certainly make an effort to catch. The young folky duo are known for their lilting ballads, having found fame initially after uploading a video of themselves covering a Fleet Foxes track to YouTube. If you’re looking for a hook on which to hang these Swedish balladeers, then Fleet Foxes is probably the best fit you’ll find – if you like the beardy Americans then you’ll love First Aid Kit.

Now on their third album, expect to be treated to the bulk of their latest effort, the excellent Stay Gold, when they play these venues this month:

January 14th – Bath Forum
January 15th – Cardiff St Davids
January 16th – Birmingham Symphony
January 17th – Manchester Apollo
January 19th – Edinburhg Usher Hall
January 20th – Newcastle City Hall
January 21st – Nottingham RCH
January 23rd – Cambridge Corn Exchange
January 24th – Brighton Dome
January 25th – Norwich UEA
January 27th – London Eventim Apollo

Keep checking the Dad Gigs section for suggestions about the one gig every month that you should try and catch!
