January 2016's Dad Gig: The Maccabees

The Maccabees were one of the first bands to make me feel old, but I’ll not hold that against them. Much. They broke through with their debut album Colour It In in 2007 and, as a 28-year-old at the time, I was just beginning to realise I was not exactly a spring chicken anymore. The Maccabees exploded onto the scene and they were essentially children. It was as if I was suddenly Bruce Forsyth’s older brother.

Fast forward to this Christmas and the Maccabees were guests on the festive Top of the Pops looking eight years older. There’s a very good reason for that. Because it was eight years later. They were suddenly men rather than boys and I’m fairly sure that makes me Tutankhamun.

Anyhow, they were still really very good and, although they’ve progressed a long way since the first flushes of their career, they’ve lost none of the energy that made them so exciting  back in the day.

Here’s one of my favourite Maccabees tunes, Toothpaste Kisses:
