It’s an unusual Dad Gig this month because I’m not totally sold on the subject of the feature, but I am intrigued enough to want to find out more. They are Wolf Alice, a London four-piece whose debut album My Love Is Cool was nominated for the Mercury Prize in a year that also saw them up for, but not winning, a Grammy and a Brit award.
There’s something really 90s about them and, as they were my formative music listening years, I’m not sure whether I like them due to the nostalgia or because they are actually really good. To put it in context, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Steve Lamacq play Echobelly on BBC 6Music the other day, so that’s where my head is at currently.
My Love Is Cool provides a few sparingly used Hole-esque thrashing guitars, combined with an xx-on-a-happy-day style delivery and some liberal touches of folk, electronica and indie pop. There are also some little glitchy gaps in Your Loves Whore that make it sound like your wireless speakers are cutting out. The latter is a black mark against them if you ask me.
They’ve attracted a really young audience, which surprises me because they are actually fairly old fashioned. However, I guess you could be 16 now and never have lived a day of the 90s so perhaps I’m in danger of becoming my parents back in 1995, when they complained that everything sounded like a rubbish version of the Beatles.
To sum up, you might want to give them a go, I’m fairly sure I like them and, to be honest, the alternatives on tour this month are Peter Andre and Jason Donovan so what do you have to lose?
