November 2014's Dad Gig: The War on Drugs

The one band you need to see in November have been compared to Springsteen, Dylan, Dire Straits and Sonic Youth. You’re intrigued, right? How can you not want to discover how that mash-up works out? If your interest is piqued, there are four opportunities to see the country-tinged, 80s inspired folk rock of Philidelphia’s The War on Drugs.

With a revolving door membership policy to rival even the Sugababes (who now advertise their vacant positions in the windows of temp agencies), The War on Drugs have managed to release just three studio albums in the nine years since singer and songwriter Adam Granduciel met up with indie star Kurt Vile and decided to form the band. This year’s long player Lost in the Dream has seen a breakthrough for the four piece, five years after Vile went off to do his own thing.

With the latest album’s earnest synths, harmonicas, horns and pianos alongside the ambient guitar sound that holds it all together, you’ll expect an epic soundscape that the band are sure to provide but things aren’t entirely po-faced – Granduciel has surprised many a reviewer with his easy going on stage persona.

The War on Drugs UK tour dates are:

  • Wednesday 5th November – Roundhouse, Camden, London.
  • Thursday 6th November – O2 Academy, Bristol.
  • Friday 7th November – Ritz, Manchester.
  • Saturday 8th November – ABC, Glasgow.
